As you may have guessed by now, I really enjoy cooking and baking, and because of this, I can really identify with Yamato san. She is my home girl. Her and me, we understand each other. She plans her foods for future events months in advance, just like I do. I get that. I understand. When she made Cake Salé, I was flabbergasted! I had never heard of such a thing before, but I trust Yamato san as a fellow baker, so I decided to do some research.
Turns out Cake Salé is a French thing, a bit like a savory bread rather than an actual cake. It has a similar consistency to a cake or a muffin, but is full of yummy savory things like meats, cheese, olives, etc. I can get behind this! So I tried it out, and it was so yummy and, surprisingly, really easy to make. Yamato san makes 2 different types, in episodes 3 (on the right) and 8 (on the left), but I chose to make the ones from episode 8 because the ones from episode 3 have corn and peas and carrots in them, and that seemed boring to me.
Ingredients (made 12 heart shaped cakes)
Adapted from this recipe here. If you want, you can certainly change up the extra ingredients to whatever suits your taste. Don’t like feta cheese? Pick a different one! Not a fan of olives? Add in some pre-cooked meat instead. The key is to keep all the ingredients finely chopped or in small pieces so that they don’t sink to the bottom of the mixture and leave an uneven consistency.
- 4 eggs
- 1 2/3 cup flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 2 tbs butter melted
- 3/4 cup milk (I used half cream half water, which was fine too)
- 1 cup kalamata olives, chopped finely
- 1 cup feta, crumbled finely
- 1 cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped finely
- 1/2 cup basil, chopped into thin strips
You will also need a heart shaped silicone mold, or a loaf pan.
How to Make the Cake Salé
First preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and prep your pan if you aren’t using a silicone pan. Next, you essentially add everything to a bowl and mix it up. I told you these were easy!
Chop up the olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and basil.
Then, melt your butter, and whisk up the eggs in a bowl.
Then, pour in everything into the bowl with the eggs except for the olives, cheese, tomato, and basil.
Give it a mix until everything is just combined, and then add in the rest of the ingredients.
Stir it all together, and then divide into your molds or pour into your loaf pan. If using the molds, fill up 3/4 of the way full.
Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick pulls out cleanly. If using a loaf pan, bake for about 50 minutes until golden brown.
And now it’s all finished!
If you like savory muffins and breads, this is the perfect thing for you. If you are expecting something sweet, maybe stay away from this one. I quite liked it, and if you want to make a loaf, I think slices of it would make great sandwich bread. Otherwise, these cute little heart shaped rolls, basically, are the perfect snack.
